TOFU

art by Scott ‘Tofu’ St. John

About

I am an artist in San Francisco working primarily in mixed media, collage and landscape painting.  My work has included maps, postcard-themed art and mail art projects.   In 2013 I began moving away from found ephemera and shifted towards making my own material for collages.   I paint paper and then cut it and reassemble the pieces in mixed media works.   This gives me the freedom to have whatever material I need as well as being able to control my color palette.   I am no longer dependent on what I can find.

This led to a series I called Collagescapes and now on to a current series of Post-Folk Art.  That is a nod to the color palettes found in costumes, textiles, pottery and other forms of traditional Kashubian and Polish folk art.

Since 1997 my work has shown in over 70 venues, primarily in California but also in other locations in the United States and abroad.

Collage Dreams

Collage Dreams

This book includes the 20 collages that appear in a one-of-a-kind artist book titled Collage Dreams. The original collages are handmade, or as one now says, analog collages. Each is made entirely from the contents of postcard booklets dating from 1910 to 1950.
